The Black Road (Slightly Changed) pt 1.

The sides swapped and now it is me, who is telling the story in the role of DM and my boyfriend is the one having the adventure. And I am not willing to make it easy for him... I am supposed to follow the Adventure League campaign, but guess what? As DM I can do whatever I want, muhehehehe!

My boyfriend is playing Arabian warrior called Asaf. He was just enjoying a food in one of the pubs in the city in the desert when he noticed stranger sitting at the table opposite to him. Stranger was wearing a hood and was all dressed in black. In the next moment he got up from his seat and without any warning attacked my boyfriend with two short sabers. Any other person would be caught off guard and immediately dead, but not Asaf! Following was quite violent encounter in which Asaf succesfully parried the attack, managed to avoid strangers blades and with one hit, pushed him on the floor. Before stranger could get up and attack again, Asaf pointed blade of his saber on the stranger's neck. In that moment the big smile appeared on the stranger's face.

'I see you reputation is doing you nothing but justice, Asaf!' he said and laughted.

Asaf was obviously confused.

'I am an ambassador of Lord's Aliance. We need your help. I just needed to check you little bit before, I am sorry if I have confused you. Let's say you have passed our little exam...'

The stranger offered Asaf a job. He would be protecting a caravan heading to the city of Parnas across the desert. Mission is to get valuable statue of the elven godess to the city in order to help establish order after civil war. City was for long time terrorized by Cult of Dragon and subsequently drowning in chaos. The Sisters from Shrine of Axes believe that delivering of statue would help them to bring order to the place.

When Asaf arrived to the camp near to the city he was introduced to Azam - leader of caravan. Present was also drangonborn Hissling about whom it was rummored that he was a spy for some powerful involved figure. Together with some other members of caravan (warriors, healers and traders) they explained Asaf his mission and offered him gold as a reward. Asaf however showed significantly greedy character and started bargaining with Azam about his reward. Azam needed to discuss it with Shrine of Axes first since Sisters were due the civil war on very tight budget. He could not promise anything in advance and disagreement grew into the heated argument. My boyfriend's character insisted on higher price and then turned around to leave. Azam (former slave trader, as no one knew back then) took a metal pot and hit with it the head of my boyfriend's character hardly. Warrior did not calculate his risks properly, being alone out of the city walls, beyond a reach of city guards. Small cheat goes a long way in the eyes of ruthless caravan leader. Asaf immediately lost conscios and was loaded on the cart together with the goods. Caravan was ready to leave.

When Asaf woke up, he was furious with anger. His head stll hurting, he draw his blade, jumped on the camel and run after Azam, who was at the lead, with intention to kill him. Caravan was already deep in the desert and the sun was hot. When Asaf reached the leader, he greeted him happily. 'I hope your head does not hurt much. We have caught the one who did it and handed him to the guards. It was probably a spy sent to sabotage our mission.' Azam lied as he learned during his times as slave-trader.

'Why did you take me with you?' Cried Azam in fury. Asaf looked surprised. 'Why? I thought this was our deal?'

'No! Deal was either you pay me more or I leave!'

'Ah,' sighted Azam with pretended concern. 'That is bad... because I can't afford to send anyone with you to show you the way back. However, we can discuss your money demands once again together with Sisterhood once we arrive in Parnas.'

From this moment my boyfriend's character held deep hatred towards Azam and swore to kill him as soon a he would get a chance.

The rest of the day went peacefully and in the evening the caravan stopped to build a camp over the night. People built tents and lighted fires. Night guard were assigned by a los. Everyone was warned not to go too far from camp because this area was known for its quicksands. Soon it became dark.

Maybe it was fault of the old and tired eyes of half-elf having first guard that night. Maybe it was just a pure luck of the goblins, that their first attackers managed to sneak though the night and cut open the throat of the sleeping caravan driver. Anyway, the battle which followed was surprising, wild and bloody. Azam woke up from the noise and jumped into the battle. He fought like a lion and just in the last moment he saved a statue from being stolen by a bunch of goblins who were already taking it from the cart. He trapped one of them into the net and managed to capture him, the rest run away. Soon the fight was over.

'What the hell was that?' Asked caravan leader, all dirty from dust and goblin blood.

'Well, we can ask this guy!' Asaf brought his goblin prisoner.

Goblin first refused to cooperate but soon enough he was forced to recognise that he was critically overpowered and any ressistance did not pay out. He was apparently smart one in his kind and after the short interrogation he revealed that the desert hords from west seem to have new leader. He and his companions were migrating from this part of the desert since the west wing became quite strong and organized. It was not safe for them here anymore.

Happy about the information he obtained, my boyfriend's character decided to keep goblin and train him as his personal bodyguard. He started the training the next morning when the rest of caravan was burying the killed caravan driver. He also promised him reward if he serves well and obeys once they get to Parnas. Than the caravan got were ready for continuing the way, knowing that it is not going to be easy journey...
